Artist Statement
My work is investigating three things all coalescing around, locating myself within myself. The first element is raw expression, what happens when I contact the surface with energy from within, what gesture is required to do this and how do I respond to it.
The next element is to find the self within the rough shapes and edges that get expressed — with little conscious planning. I search to find a quiet conversation between the external gesture of approaching the surface of the canvas with memory and emotion — hoping that an internal sense of self emerges. Have memories transformed into colors and shapes? Where is my biology? Can I see it in the raw and unplanned expression? Is it hiding inside the gesture created with the materials? Is there a voice to be found inside the shapes? The voice of human emergence and transformation.
The third element is line and edge which manifest often in the language of symbols. How do symbols and shape’s function? What do they communicate about ways of being alive? Can an shape tell something about the way cells divide, the way a dancer spins, or how a wave crushes on the shore? I think it can.
